Which Is The Most Common Liposuction Technique?

Posted By David Sayah, MD

Widely regarded as the gold standard in body sculpting, tumescent liposuction is the most common liposuction technique performed today. With so many methods offered, many of our patients are curious to know why tumescent liposuction is so popular. In this blog post, ourBeverly Hills liposuction specialists explain why.

ABOUT TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION

Tumescent liposuction uses a sterile tumescent solution to break apart fat cells in the target area. During the procedure, patients are placed under local anesthesia to maximize comfort during surgery. The plastic surgeon then makes small incisions near the target area. Next, the tumescent solution is injected into the target area where it will remain for about 30 minutes. During this time, the skin swells up as the fluid infiltrates the deepest layers of the fat and saturates the area. Next, the fat will be removed via suction and a micro-cannula.

Traditional liposuction methods involve suctioning out the fat deposits without any additional help to loosen the fat cells before removal. Using the tumescent solution allows the surgeon to remove unwanted fat smoothly and more effectively. Additionally, the solution, which is comprised of lidocaine, a local anesthetic and epinephrine, constricts the blood vessels, minimizing bleeding and other complications during surgery. Post-operative side effects, such as bruising, soreness and discomfort, are also minimized. Because tumescent liposuction involves inserting a micro-cannula into tiny, precisely made incisions, visible scarring is reduced. Thanks to the precision of the micro-cannula and efficiency of the solution, results with tumescent liposuction are more consistent and noticeable faster than with traditional liposuction techniques.

LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR LIPOSUCTION OPTIONS

While tumescent liposuction is preferred by many patients, it may not be the best technique for everyone. For instance, if you seek liposuction on your face, neck and chin, your plastic surgeon may suggest using laser liposuction. This procedure involves less bruising and is ideal for delicate body areas that are hard to conceal, like the face and neck. Laser liposuction also tightens and smooths skin, creating a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. The technique that is best for you will depend on your aesthetic needs and goals.

If you are considering undergoing liposuction, one of our liposuction specialists will gladly help you chose the liposuction technique that best fits your goals and needs. Schedule a consultation by calling our Beverly Hills plastic surgery practice at (310) 984-1150.
