The most satisfied liposuction patients are those who are well prepared
for the procedure. Our team
of plastic surgeons have compiled a
complete liposuction guide to help our patients plan for their surgery, but we thought it might be
helpful to expand on some of the most important points pertaining to preparation,
so that you can increase your chances of obtaining beautiful, long-lasting results.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
There are several types of liposuction techniques and each is performed differently. As a result, your recovery timeline and the side effects you experience (e.g., swelling, bruising) may differ slightly from what other patients experience. Familiarize yourself with all of your liposuction options before making a final decision.
Choosing a plastic surgeon to perform your procedure is just as important to your success in achieving positive results. Make sure your plastic surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is experienced in performing liposuction.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT
Before your surgery, you must understand that the procedure is not a substitute for weight loss, nor does it prevent future weight gain. The best candidates for the procedure are those who are near their ideal weight and have firm, elastic skin. If you have recently lost or gained a substantial amount of weight, it is best to wait until your weight has stabilized before undergoing surgery.
PREPARE FOR RECOVERY
Preparing for your recovery can make the difference between a comfortable one and a stressful one. Make sure to fill your prescriptions ahead of time and go grocery shopping to have easy-to-prepare meals ready. Having everything you need on hand allows you to recover in peace.
REQUEST HELP
Our plastic surgeons recommend our patients make arrangements for help during their recovery, and our past patients have told us that they’re glad they did! Bed rest is a must after surgery, as it allows your body to heal properly. Ask your spouse or loved one to help you with errands or chores during the first two weeks of recovery. If you have children or pets, you will also need someone to take care of them as you heal.
FOLLOW THE DOCTOR’S ORDERS
Prior to your surgery, you will meet with your plastic surgeon to go over a detailed list of guidelines to follow before and after your surgery. For example, you will be asked to avoid strenuous activities for the first few days after surgery and you will need to wear a liposuction compression garment. Not following directions can lead to complications or alter your liposuctions results.
On a related note, it is also important to attend all of your follow-up visits. During these visits, your plastic surgeon will monitor your healing progress and possibly make recommendations to improve your recovery.
