Benefits of Tumescent Liposuction

Liposuction in its earliest form was used throughout the 1960s. Initially, liposuction was performed “dry,” meaning that the fat deposits were reduced by suction alone, without any additional help to loosen the fat cells before withdrawal.* This dry liposuction method delivered only inconsistent results until the concept of wet liposuction was pioneered in the 1980s. Commonly called tumescent liposuction, the process involves injecting the targeted area with a special fluid mixture to break up the fat cells and facilitate their removal.

The fluid injected during tumescent liposuction includes both lidocaine, a local anesthetic, and epinephrine, which constricts the blood vessels to minimize bleeding. As a result, very little blood loss occurs during tumescent liposuction. This vasoconstriction also extends the effects of the local anesthesia; lidocaine remains active in the targeted area for up to 36 hours, which means patients are more comfortable in the initial stages of their recovery compared to earlier forms of liposuction.

Practicing tumescent techniques for liposuction also allows for the use of smaller microcannulas, which allow for a more controlled, gradual removal of the targeted fat cells. Our surgeons are able to achieve smoother and more precise results with these smaller cannulas, as larger cannulas run the risk of reducing too much fat too quickly, which could cause irregularities in the final result.*

About the Procedure

The first step in our Beverly Hills tumescent liposuction is to make small incisions near the target area. These are only a few millimeters in diameter, just large enough to allow the cannula to pass through, and should not need stitches following your surgery.

Next, the fluid mixture is prepared with the proper ratio of lidocaine, epinephrine, and sterile solution. This mixture is then slowly injected into the target area until the skin is swollen. It takes about a half an hour for the fluid to infiltrate the deepest layers of the fat and saturate the area.

Reduction of the fat cells and the tumescent solution is the next stage.* A gentle back and forth movement are used to further break up the fatty deposits under the skin, while suction is applied to permanently remove the solution and reduce the fat cells.* The cannula used for removal may be larger or smaller, although most of our surgeons prefer the results and precision that a more slender surgical instrument allows.

From start to finish, the entire process should take just an hour or two. Blood loss is minimal, and no general anesthesia is necessary.

After the Procedure

Following your Beverly Hills tumescent liposuction, the ongoing effects of the local anesthetic will keep you comfortable throughout the earliest stages of healing. Since general anesthesia is not necessary, you won’t have to remain overnight waiting for your general anesthesia to wear off. Instead, you can have a friend or family member drive you home to recover in comfortable surroundings.

You can expect to experience some bruising and swelling in the days following your surgery. A compression garment should be worn initially to help reduce both of these while promoting elimination of the remaining tumescent solution. Compression in the area will also encourage your skin to conform to your new body contours. You should plan on taking things easy for the first week or two to give your body time to heal and work gradually up to more active pursuits.
