Why You Need An Experienced Surgeon For The Best Liposuction Results

Posted By David Sayah, MD

As medical spas become more common, more people are choosing to use them for their liposuction appointments. The idea of medical spas may seem appealing at first: a spa sounds more relaxing, and they may offer procedures at a lower price as well. But the best liposuction results may not come from a med spa at all.

KNOWING WHO’S OPERATING ON YOU

Even though the word “medical” is right there in the name, that doesn’t mean a med spa is as medical as it is a spa. Unlike hospitals and surgical centers, there are no national standards that medical spas have to meet. And while all medical spas need to have a doctor’s name attached, that doesn’t necessarily mean a doctor will be performing your procedures, or even that a doctor is always on the premises.

TRUTH IN ADVERTISING?

Medical spas offer a few different types of procedures that they call liposuction, but these might be more accurately referred to as “lipo-like.” These include non-invasive devices that use heat and vacuum massage, minimally invasive methods like injections or the use of externally applied lasers to liquefy fat. However, all of these methods are limited in how much they can accomplish compared to traditional lipo, and some require you to return to the spa over and over for multiple treatments.

The best way to ensure you get good results is to go to an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon. That way, you know you’re trusting your body to someone who is knowledgeable about the many different options available for liposuction, can help you choose which approach will work best for you, and has the expertise to deliver outstanding results.
