New Asps Guidelines For Better Liposuction Results

Posted By David Sayah, MD

As body sculpting with lipoplasty has become one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in the world, liposuction techniques and standards are being constantly refined, resulting in improved outcomes and better patient safety.

A recent paper published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery–Global Open describes in detail five key principles that plastic surgeons should follow in order to obtain optimal results.

5 Key Principles Plastic Surgeons Should Follow to Obtain Optimal Liposuction Results.

  • Preoperative Planning: Dialogue between physician and patient is of utmost importance. The greatest effort should go into ensuring that suitable candidates are selected; these should be healthy individuals who are committed to a healthy lifestyle and have realistic expectations.
  • Intraoperative Safety: It is important for the safety and comfort of the patient that the appropriate level of anesthetization is utilized; this may vary depending on whether it is a small- or large- volume procedure. The position of the patient is another important consideration.
  • Wetting Solutions: The appropriate wetting solution should be used. Dialogue between surgeon and anesthetist is key to ensuring optimal fluid management throughout the procedure, a factor that is especially critical in large-volume liposuction.
  • Body Contouring and Complication Prevention: Smooth and uniform movements are essential in avoiding irregular contours, as well as committing to superficial undermining. Instrument selection is important as well.
  • Post-Op Care and Outcomes: It is essential that compression garments are worn during recovery and that patients are monitored to prevent complications. It is important to stress that success of the treatment depends heavily on lifestyle changes; this is especially significant because patient satisfaction depends more highly on their appearance than any other factor.

Liposuction continues undergoing reevaluation according to new innovations and the lessons learned from accumulated experience. The aim of outlining and adhering to these principles is to ensure safer, more consistent, and more satisfying results.
