How Lipo Helps When Diet And Exercise Fall Short

Posted By David Sayah, MD

Although there is a common misperception that liposuction helps shed extra pounds, in reality this procedure is not a solution for weight loss. However, there’s no denying that lipo does eliminate problem areas when diet and exercise fall short. How does liposculpture help make a difference?

UNDERSTANDING FAT

To understand how lipo sculpts and slims the body, it’s important to know that there are two different types of fat: visceral and subcutaneous. Visceral fat is a deeper layer of cells surrounding the internal organs, and is responsible for the majority of weight gain. Subcutaneous fat lies closer to the skin’s surface, and is easy to pinch between your fingers; this is the fat that’s targeted through liposuction.

Losing visceral fat is only possible through diet and exercise. Yet, while those methods do reduce the amount of visceral fat, subcutaneous fat often remains behind even when eating right and staying active. That’s why it’s not uncommon for those who at a healthy weight to still notice love handles or a bit of muffin top that just won’t go away.

The right combination of getting and staying in shape combined with lipo offers an effective combination approach to getting better body contours. This is one reason why liposuction has become so prevalent, and was the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure in the world last year. However, remember that your liposuction results depend largely on the skill of your surgeon; when looking for a practitioner, don’t sacrifice quality just for a lower cost.
