Why Awake Liposuction Is Becoming Popular

Posted By David Sayah, MD

At Simply Liposuction, we offer several liposuction options to cater to the individualized needs and goals of our Los Angeles patients. One increasingly popular option among our patients is “awake liposuction,” which uses a combination of sedatives and local anesthetic instead of the general anesthesia commonly used in other traditional liposuction procedures. Awake liposuction patients are able to enjoy a slimmer, more beautiful physique with a few added benefits. Here, we share four reasons why awake liposuction is quickly gaining popularity.

THE PATIENT FEELS MORE IN CONTROL

During awake liposuction, you are conscious during the entire procedure. This means you are able to communicate with the surgeon throughout the procedure, which helps to ensure that the surgery is as effective as possible and reduces the potential need for follow-up treatments. Thanks to awake liposuction, patients can feel more in control of their procedure and results.

THE PROCEDURE IS SAFE

Ideal candidates for plastic surgery should be in optimal health. Many people are unable to move forward with plastic surgery because of preexisting health concerns or conditions. For example, patients with heart or lung issues are not suitable candidates for traditional liposuction because general anesthesia may cause changes in the patient’s heartrate and increase pressure on the lungs. Awake liposuction allows patients to still pursue liposuction without worrying about the associated risks that come with general anesthesia. Patients also experience less bleeding and reduced bruising with awake liposuction.

FASTER RECOVERY

Patients who are placed under general anesthesia may experience drowsiness, nausea and/or vomiting following the procedure. Because of this, traditional liposuction patients are required to stay in our recovery suite while the general anesthesia wears off, and in rare cases are required to stay overnight. Awake liposuction uses sedatives and local anesthesia instead of full anesthesia, allowing the surgery to be performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients are free to return to the comfort of their own home faster.

A COST-EFFECTIVE OPTION

The use of general anesthesia not only adds to your recovery time, but to the cost of your procedure as well. Awake liposuction eliminates general anesthesia fees, making it a more cost-effective treatment option. Additionally, because awake liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure, you also avoid overnight hospital stay fees. The procedure can potentially save you hundreds of dollars!

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TODAY

While there are several benefits to awake liposuction, it may not be the best option for everyone. For example, patients who wish to eliminate body fat but also augment other body areas, such as the cheeks and lips, may benefit more from fat transfer liposuction.
