As one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed worldwide,
it’s no secret liposuction can produce outstanding results. However,
liposuction is not right for everyone. In this blog post, our Beverly
Hills lipo specialists discuss four common signs that liposuction is not
a good option.
UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS
The most satisfied plastic surgery patients are those who have thoroughly researched their procedure and know what results to expect. First and foremost, liposuction is not an appropriate tool for weight loss. Rather liposuction is designed to eliminate small, stubborn fatty deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Patients who desire to lose a substantial amount of weight should do so instead of or prior to liposuction. It’s also important to recognize that liposuction comes with potential risks and side effects, as all surgical procedures do. The final results of liposuction occur gradually; swelling and bruising in the treatment area typically dissipate three to four weeks after surgery. Before making your decision, be sure to research your procedure and speak to a board certified liposuction plastic surgeon.
SMOKING
Smoking increases the risk of complications during surgery and impairs your body’s ability to heal properly and quickly. Reputable plastic surgeons instruct their patients to quit smoking at least four weeks prior to surgery. If you are unwilling or unable to quit smoking, you will need to postpone your surgery until you can. If you need help kicking the habit, speak to your primary care physician about smoking cessation plans.
INSUFFICIENT RECOVERY TIME
Liposuction requires downtime, no exceptions. Most patients require at least two weeks of recovery. During this time, you will need to take time off from work and your normal routine, including exercise. Everyday tasks like bending and lifting young children should also be avoided. Returning to your regular routine too soon after recovery can increase the risk of post-op complications and even alter your results. If you cannot take sufficient time off from work to recover, it’s wise to postpone your surgery.
PLANNED FUTURE PREGNANCIES
The physical effects pregnancy and breastfeeding have on the body are common reasons why women choose to have liposuction. But because pregnancy and breastfeeding stretch out skin and tissue, liposuction results can be altered if a woman becomes pregnant in the future. Giving birth after having liposuction is safe, but women are advised to delay surgery until they are certain that they are done having children.
